Historical Background of the Organization

In May 2, 1999, Bishop Broderick Pabillo, D.D, as a parish priest then arrived in Macarascas to start his pastoral work among the people. He saw the cycle of ignorance, poverty and hopelessness, the youth of the parish are victims of.

Boys and girls coming from far-flung baranggays flock to the nearest baranggays where they could avail of a high school education. However, with the scarcity of transportation and lack of financial means, they settle in the cheapest boarding houses or worst still, they walk the 3-6 kilometers distance. Living in boarding houses where there is practically no adult supervision, students dropped from school due to premature marriages and pregnancies. This prompted Bishop Pabillo to open an alternative boarding house – a dormitory in the parish, offered to those enrolled in the nearby Macarascas Public High School, 700 meters away from the parish compound.

At that time, the Licerio family donated a 2-hectare land to the parish.  With the concerted efforts of civic-conscious organizations like the Rotary Clubs of Parañaque through their president Mr. Joseph Sison; of Makati with their president Atty. Francis Gustillo; and of Puerto Princesa with Mr. Ong the president then, construction materials were acquired for the dormitory building. As the counterpart from the parish, the parish pastoral council and the parents of the children gave their contribution in the form of the labor force. In the spirit of “bayanihan”, the dormitory (a 20 bed-capacity) for girls was constructed and blessed on February 9, 2001.

Who will supervise and tutor the girls after school hours? Fr. Pabillo requested the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco) of St. Mary Mazzarello School in Victorias City, Negros Occidental to look for female volunteers. Two of their past vocation prospects accepted the invitation of Fr. Pabillo, namely Ms. Joy Chavez and Ms. Buena Hacermida. They were the first volunteers and houseparent of the 14 female student boarders who were enrolled in the nearby public high school: Macarascas National Highschool.
What started at first as a mere boarding house, evolved into a different kind of boarding school!

On November, 2001, Fr. Pabillo, S.D.B came to meet Fr. Rogelio Alarcon, O.P. of Angelicum College, Quezon City. Fr. Alarcon, offered his brainchild: the REAP - Re-Entry Education Alternative for the Poor to Fr. Pabillo. The REAP was conceived so that the poor can access the same quality of education as in the private schools in Manila. It is a non-graded basic education program accredited by the Department of Education and PAASCU to Level II. REAP combines the Angelicum System of Education and the Home Study Program. Through the assistance of the Dominican sisters of the Holy Trinity College of Puerto Princesa, placement examinations were given this time to 24 female boarders to determine their academic levels and they received the modules for their year level.

On April 1, 2002, Fr. Rogelio Alarcon visited the dormitory and saw that the girls were still enrolled in Macarascas National Highschool and at the same time taking up the modules of Angelicum College. The students cannot be enrolled in two schools at the same time.

In the school year 2002-2003, after a series of consultation from the students themselves, parents, parish pastoral council and volunteers, the consensus was reached: all boarders will enroll in Angelicum College under the REAP program, cease their schooling in the public high school and continue to live in the dormitory where they are provided with free accommodations and food. Two more volunteers from Manila: Ms. Alicia (Ate Leclec) Tamporon and Ms. Lizzette de Leon, and Mr. Eugene Bautista from Victorias City, reinforced the growing tasks of running a dormitory.

A continuous flow of volunteers was seen in these past years. Private individuals hailing from different parts of the country leave the luxuries of metropolitan living and embrace the simple lifestyle of the learners. They not only share their talents and knowledge but they share their lives. They accompany these boys and girls as big sisters and brothers in their journey toward full Christian maturity. In the end, these dedicated and committed volunteers discover a life that is freer, happier and more authentically human and steeped in prayer.

In June 2004, Fr. Pabillo’s request for 2 full-time volunteers from the Jesuit Volunteers Philippines (JVP)Foundation Inc. was granted and every year thereafter. Ms. Jika David and Ms. Jet Ong were the first volunteers JVP sent to Macarascas. For that school year – 2004-05, 40 girls were enrolled and assisted by 5 full-time volunteers.

In November of 2004, the parish pastoral council decided to open a dormitory this time for the boys. The same Licerio family donated an additional 1hectare and 300 sq. meters of land for this purpose. This time the Rotary Club of Makati through their president Atty. Francis Gustilo, funded the construction of the Boys Dormitory. In the following year, 2005, the Boys Dormitory was blessed.
As for the school year 2005-06, 61 boys and girls are accommodated; the main problem this time is the food supply both for the boarders and volunteers. In December, 2005, Pondo ng Pinoy Foundation approved the project with the parish: a monthly food grant of Php30,000.00, to the dormitory for the period of 2 years.

Ms. Jika David, one of the first JVP volunteer of the dormitory encouraged her friends in Manila to form an NGO so-called DORM FUND, Inc., with the main objective of raising funds for the daily needs of the dormitory. Together with the donations in kind by the parents, and walk-in donors, they provide the additional funds for the needs of the dormitory.

In June, 2006, the first two sisters of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians: Sr. Rosalia Panganiban, FMA & Sr. Catherine Urgello, FMA, arrived in Macarascas to continue the program started by Fr. Broderick Pabillo who was ordained bishop last 19 August 2006.

In June, 2007, the first community of three (3) sisters of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians: Sr. Catherine Urgello,FMA, the directress, Sr.Leonor Peralta,FMA & Sr.Clara Alacapa,FMA, was formally installed by their provincial superior: Sr. Alice Fulgencio, FMA in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist officiated by His Excellency Most Reverend Bishop Pedro Arigo, D.D., of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa, Palawan & the acting parish priest, Rev. Fr. Christian Sabili.
